Cash

Cash is considered the most secure asset class and is highly liquid. It generally refers to investments in bank bills or similar securities which are invested in the short term money market.

Cash is an integral part of building a diversified investment portfolio and forms an important part of many investors’ portfolios, particularly those seeking capital preservation or have a short investment timeframe.

Cash provides:

  • An important source of liquidity
  • The provision of regular income
  • Capital preservation

Philosophy and process

Investment philosophy

Investment philosophy

Primarily cash funds should provide liquidity and extremely low levels of volatility. There are, however, opportunities for active management to add value through a combination of interest rate and credit strategies.

Investment process

Investment process

Our approach starts with fundamental analysis, focusing on the outlook for monetary policy but also considering market sentiment, domestic and global economic data and the performance of the New Zealand dollar. These views and our conviction in them help to determine our portfolio exposures. We then adjust these exposures using an in-house management tool which estimates the risk of the portfolio in total and for each of the key drivers of performance within it – duration, yield curve and credit.
